Events
1862 – Auguste Nélaton (1807-1873) designed a porcelain-tipped probe to confirm the presence of a retained bullet in Giuseppe Garibaldi’s ankle after the Battle of Aspromonte. Italian physicians Rosseau and Zannetti confirmed the presence of a retained bullet as the porcelain tip became visibly marked when rubbed against lead of the bullet, and removed it.
