Education Theory Made Practical

ALiEM has released a free, downloadable library for clinician-educators. Education Theory Made Practical comprises 8 volumes covering 77 high-yield education theories and frameworks. Each chapter starts with a real teaching problem and turns theory into usable tools for feedback, assessment, curriculum design, debriefing, and faculty development. No paywalls, no logins, just practical FOAM education freely downloadable from the ALiEM Library

This series grew out of the ALiEM Faculty Incubator, an eight-year international collaboration that brought together more than 240 clinician-educators. The Incubator aim was simple but ambitious, to translate education theory into something clinicians could actually use. Each chapter starts with a real educational problem, explains the underlying theory in plain language, and then shows how it applies in day-to-day teaching, assessment, feedback, and curriculum design.

The final three volumes, released in January 2026, complete the set. They cover practical teaching methods, programme design and evaluation, assessment frameworks, educational sociology, leadership, and lifelong learning. Together with Volumes 1–5, they form a library that spans everything from cognitive psychology and curriculum design to organisational change and adaptive expertise.

What matters most is accessibility. Every volume is published under a Creative Commons licence, meaning there are no paywalls, no logins, and no institutional barriers. These books can be downloaded and used in faculty development programmes, whether you’re in a major academic centre or teaching on the clinical shop floor.

If you’ve ever wanted a way to understand education theory without needing a PhD, or a textbook that actually respects the realities of clinical teaching, this series is well worth your time. It is a reminder that free medical education is not only alive and well, but increasingly sophisticated, collaborative, and globally shared.
