1884 – First public presentation of local anaesthesia. At the German Ophthalmological Society congress in Heidelberg, Josef Brettauer presented the preliminary communication and experiments of Carl Koller (1857-1944) and his discovery of cocaine as a local anaesthetic for the eye.
