Swiss physician Gaspard Vieusseux (1746–1814) described cerebrospinal meningitis in 1805 and gave the first clinical account of lateral medullary syndrome.

Bacterial Meningitis
Bacterial meningitis = pyogenic infection of the cerebral ventricles and subarachnoid space -> CSF; usually confined to meninges (although in neonates and adults with Listeria monocytogenes -> cerebritis, encephalitis and abscesses can form)
Aseptic Meningitis
Aseptic Meningitis = meningeal inflammation with negative bacterial cultures.
