Charles Carroll Lund (1883-1972)

Charles Carroll Lund (1883-1972) was an American surgeon

Boston surgeon who contributed his administrative and professional talent unstintingly to the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, and the Massachusetts Medical Society.

Major contributions to medicine and public health were in the broader areas of medical research and patient care.

Eponymously remembered for the Lund and Browder Chart estimating the total body surface area affected in the management of burns. First published in 1944 with Newton C Browder, and was based on experience treating victims of the Cocoanut Grove fire on November 28, 1942

  • Born on April 15, 1895 at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, USA eldest son of prominent Boston surgeon Frederick Bates Lund Sr (1865-1950)
  • 1914 – member of the Harvard crew famously winning the Henley Regatta
  • 1942 – Cocoanut Grove fire, United States’ most deadly nightclub disaster (November 28, 1942)
  • 1957 – surgeon-in-chief of the Harvard Division of Boston City Hospital
  • 1958 – President, Massachusetts Medical Society
  • 1959-1961 director, Harvard Division of Boston City Hospital
  • Died on July 26, 1972 at Chestnut Hill, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
