Births
1787 – Jacques Lisfranc de Saint-Martin (1787-1847), French Surgeon. Described the Lisfranc injury; ligament; joint; amputation… [opération de Lisfranc] and a great number of surgical procedures including – surgical resection of the rectum in the treatment of rectal carcinoma (1826); lithotomy in women and the amputation of the cervix uteri
1853 – Sir James Mackenzie (1853-1925), Scottish general practitioner and cardiologist responsible for Mackenzie’s puzzle, the Ink Polygraph and the Birth of Modern Cardiology
1887 – Eduard Glanzmann (1887-1959), Swiss paediatrician; described Glanzmann thrombastenia (1918)
1912 – Max Hamilton (1912-1988), German born British Psychiatrist. Described the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D)(HDRS)
1924 – Peter Josef Safar (1924-2003), Austrian physician. Described as the “Father of modern resuscitation” and “founder of critical care medicine.” Driving force behind mouth-to-mouth ventilation, the development of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the establishment of intensive care units.
Deaths
1983 – Frederick Roeck Thompson (1907–1983), American orthopedic surgeon; inventor of the Thompson Vitallium Hip Prosthesis (1950)
