Events
1844 – While surgeon to the Meath Hospital, Francis Rynd (1801–1861) treated a case of severe facial neuralgia by introducing a morphia–creosote solution subcutaneously along the course of the affected nerves. The first published account of hypodermic needle injection of subcutaneous opiate in pain therapy .
2013 – World Clubfoot Day is established by the Ponseti International Association; observed on 3 June, the birthday of Ignacio Ponseti (1914–2009), an orthopaedic surgeon who pioneered non-surgical management of congenital clubfoot.
Births
1886 – Petrus Johannes Waardenburg (1886-1979), Dutch ophthalmologist and geneticist. One of the founders of clinical genetics and eponymously remembered for his descriptions of Waardenburg syndrome (1951); Waardenburg-Jonkers disease (1961); and Shah-Waardenburg syndrome (1981).
Deaths
1657 – William Harvey (1578-1657), English physician; made seminal contributions in the fields of anatomy and physiology
