2008 – Global Handwashing Day was launched by the Global Public–Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW), later renamed the Global Handwashing Partnership, to promote handwashing with soap as a simple, effective, low-cost way to prevent infection and save lives.

1859 – Augusta Déjerine-Klumpke (1859-1927), American neurologist; described Klumpke palsy (1885)
1874 – Edwin Allen Locke (1874-1971), American Physician; described the Cabot-Locke murmur (1903)
Deaths
1941 – Henry Edmund Gaskin Boyle (1875-1941), Barbadian/British anaesthetist; designed the Boyle Intratracheal ether apparatus (1912), Boyle machine (1919), and Boyle-Davis Gag (1922)
1997 – MacDonald Critchley (1900-1997), English neurologist; described Adie-Critchley syndrome (1927). Influential neurological writer with books including The Divine Banquet of the Brain and The Citadel of the Senses, The Parietal Lobes, and Music and the Brain
