Events
1869 – The subcutaneous aspirator of Georges-Paul Dieulafoy (1839-1911) was presented to the Académie de Médecine (by Adolphe Gubler). The piston-driven syringe with valve and interchangeable trocars/cannulae was designed to safely aspirate deep fluid collections, being a less invasive alternative to trocar puncture for pleural effusions, abscesses, and other collections.
Births
1799 – John Light Atlee (1799-1885), American physician and surgeon. Revised the operation of ovariotomy and was one of the organizers of the American Medical Association
Deaths
1999 – Denise Louis-Bar (1914-1999), Belgian neuropsychiatrist; described Louis-Bar syndrome [aka: ataxia-telangiectasia] (1941)
2007 – Alan Lyell (1917-2007), Scottish Dermatologist; described Lyell Syndrome (1956) aka Toxic epidermal necrolysis
