Mogens Stig Norn (1925-2023) portrait 2017

Mogens Stig Norn (1925-2023) was a Danish ophthalmologist

Trained through the Kolding–Copenhagen system and recognised as a specialist in 1958, Norn specialised in tear film and conjunctival cytology. He served as president of the Danish Ophthalmological Society, and became editor-in-chief of Acta Ophthalmologica in 1975.

In 1973 he introduced and formalised lissamine green for vital staining of the cornea and conjunctiva, a complement to fluorescein and a generally better-tolerated alternative to rose bengal.

  • Died January 28, 2023 in Virum

Key Medical Contributions
Vital-stain contribution

1973 – Lissamine green (vital staining of cornea and conjunctiva). Norn’s Acta Ophthalmologica paper positioned lissamine green as a practical ocular-surface vital dye. Clinically similar in what it highlights on conjunctiva/cornea, but generally better tolerated than rose bengal, shifting everyday surface staining beyond fluorescein alone.
