April 25 – On This Day in Medical History
Medical milestones, landmark publications, and notable births and deaths associated with April 25.
Events
1903 – In a famous self-experiment, Sir Henry Head (1861-1940) had his superficial radial nerve (and the lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm) surgically divided, a segment excised, and immediately repaired with fine silk sutures by James Sherren (1872-1945). Head’s sensory recovery over the following 5 years was mapped by William Halse Rivers Rivers (1864-1922) helping shape the classic distinctions between deep, protopathic, and epicritic sensation.
