Births
1779 – Friedrich Ludwig Kreysig (1779-1839), German physician and botanist; described the Heim-Kreysig sign (1816)
1837– Sir Morell Mackenzie (1837-1892), English otorhinolaryngologist; provided early description of Barrett’s oesophagus (1884). Founded the first dedicated laryngological hospital in the world, the Metropolitan Free Dispensary for Diseases of the Throat and Loss of Voice (1863)
1843 – Camillo Golgi (1843-1926), Italian biologist and pathologist. Multiple eponymous terms including Golgi apparatus, Golgi tendon organ, Golgi-Mazzoni corpuscles and Golgi cells (type I and II). Shared Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1906) with Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934)
1929 – C. H. Joseph Chang (1929-2017), Korean-American radiologist; described Chang sign (1965)
Deaths
1930 – Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), Scottish doctor and writer. Created the character Sherlock Holmes (1887) based on his former surgical mentor Joseph Bell (1837–1911)
