Births
1914 – Henning Moritz Ruben (1914-2004) was a Danish anaesthetist, dentist, inventor, athlete and entertainer. Innovator behind the Ruben valve, AMBU bag, a constant-rate syringe pump; a portable foot suction device; and AMBU man. Ruben was one of the first to describe (with James Elan) the head tilt method of securing a clear airway during resuscitation
1921 – Maria Magdalena Dąbska (1921-2014), Polish pathologist and oncologist; described Dąbska tumor (1969)
Deaths
1865 – Joseph Rouanet (1797-1865), French physician; introduced his heart sounds hypothesis [S1 and S2] (1832)
1870 – Albrecht von Gräfe (1828-1870), German ophthalmologist. Father of scientific ophthalmology; first successful treatment for glaucoma via iridectomy and the design of the “Graefe knife” for cataract surgery
1888 – Paul Wilhelm Heinrich Langerhans (1847-1888) was a German physician and zoologist; described Langerhans cell (1868), and Islets of Langerhans (1869)
1936 – Charles Gilbert Chaddock (1861-1936), American neurologist, psychiatrist, poet and medical translator; described Chaddock sign (1911), and Chaddock wrist sign (1912)
1952 – Walter Arthur Bastedo (1873-1952), Canadian-American gastroenterologist; described Bastedo sign (1909) in appendicitis
2014 – Maria Magdalena Dąbska (1921-2014), Polish pathologist and oncologist; described Dąbska tumor (1969)
