Events
1856 – Australia’s first medical school established. The University of Sydney formally created its Faculty of Medicine when the Senate appointed a Board of Examiners (including Professor John Smith, Professor of Chemistry and Experimental Physics, and eight Sydney medical practitioners). Smith became the first Dean, laying the foundations for Australia’s first university-based medical school.

1883 – Arthur Ernest Guedel (1883-1956), American anesthesiologist. Designed the Guedel-Waters Cuffed intratracheal tube (1928), Guedel Oropharyngeal airway (1933), Guedel laryngeal plug (1934), and Guedel classification (1937)
1884 – Burrill Bernard Crohn (1884-1983), American gastroenterologist; described Crohn’s disease (1932)
1894 – Lester Tallmon Jones (1894-1983), American ophthalmologist; described the lacrimal pump, Jones fluorescein dye tests, and the Jones Pyrex tubes for conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomy
1913 – Edward Harry Bishop (1913-1995), American obstetrician and gynecologist; defined the Bishop Score (1964) and uterine tocolysis (1961)
1918 – Brian Arthur Sellick (1918-1996), English anaesthetist; described Sellick manoeuvre (1961) [Cricoid pressure]

1881 – Joseph Škoda (1805–1881), Czech physician; described Škodaic ressonance (1837), and Škoda sign (1852)
1951 – Peter Gordon Lawrence Essex-Lopresti (1916-1951), British orthopaedic surgeon; described Essex-Lopresti fracture (1951)
