Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA)

  • low specificity -> SLE and other autoimmune diseases

Rheumatoid factor

  • IgG vs IgM
  • low specificity
    • -> RA
    • -> mixed cryoglobulinaemia
    • -> subacute bacterial endocarditis
    • -> any chronic antigenic stimulation

Anticardiolipin

  • low specificity
    • -> antiphospholipid syndrome
    • -> SLE
    • -> other autoimmune diseases
    • -> viral illnesses

Anti-DNA and Anti-Smith

  • -> SLE

Anti-Ro and La

  • -> SLE with congenital heart block
  • -> Sjögren syndrome

Anti-centromere

  • -> limited cutaneous scleroderma (CREST)

Anti-ribonuclear protein

  • -> SLE
  • -> mixed connective tissue disorder
  • -> undifferentiated connective tissue disorder

C3 and C4

  • -> falls in: SLE, autoimmune chronic active hepatitis
  • -> rise in: biliary obstruction, nephrotic syndrome, acute phase response

Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody (ANCA)

Antiglomerular Basement Membrane

  • -> Goodpasture syndrome

Anti-smooth muscle

  • -> autoimmune disease
  • -> chronic active hepatitis
  • -> EBV

Anti-mitochondrial

  • -> primary biliary cirrhosis
  • -> chronic active hepatitis
  • -> idiopathic cirrhosis

Anti-gliadin, Anti-endomseal, Anti-transglutaminase

Chris is an Intensivist and ECMO specialist at The Alfred ICU, where he is Deputy Director (Education). He is a Clinical Adjunct Associate Professor at Monash University, the Lead for the  Clinician Educator Incubator programme, and a CICM First Part Examiner.

He is an internationally recognised Clinician Educator with a passion for helping clinicians learn and for improving the clinical performance of individuals and collectives. He was one of the founders of the FOAM movement (Free Open-Access Medical education) has been recognised for his contributions to education with awards from ANZICS, ANZAHPE, and ACEM.

His one great achievement is being the father of three amazing children.
