Events
1899 – The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine was formally inaugurated (as the Liverpool School of Tropical Diseases) by Joseph Lister (1827-1912) (of antiseptic and aspetic fame. It was the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in the field of tropical medicine.
1908 – At the thirty-seventh Congress der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Chirurgie in Berlin, August Karl Gustav Bier (1861-1949) demonstrated his new regional anaesthesia technique (Bier block) by performing a lower limb amputation and resection of an elbow. The procedure required minimal equipment; avoided a general anaesthetic; and provided a blood free surgical site.

1856 – Howard Henry Tooth (1856–1925), English neurologist; described Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (1886)
1876 – Róbert Bárány (1876-1936) was an Austro-Hungarian otologist. Described Bárány bogengänge ohr (1907), the Bárány past pointing test (1906), Bárány caloric test (1906) and invented the Bárány chair (1907) and Bárány’s alarm apparatus (1908)
Deaths
1908 – Leopold Schrötter Ritter von Kristelli (1837-1908), Austrian physician; described Paget-Schroetter Syndrome (1884)
