1955 – The World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) was founded at the first World Congress of Anaesthesiologists in Scheveningen, Netherlands. Bringing national anaesthesia societies together to raise global standards in anaesthesia, pain medicine, and resuscitation. Harold Griffith was elected the first president, Manuel Martínez Curbelo the vice-President and 26 Member Societies


Births

1737Luigi Galvani (1737-1798) Italian obstetrician, surgeon and anatomist. Discovered the physiological action of electricity and demonstrated the existence of natural electric current in animal tissue – “the electrical forces in muscular movements” or the ‘animal electricity

1844Friedrich Carl Ferdinand Busch (1844-1916), German surgeon and dentist; described Busch-Hoffa fracture (1869)

1853Pierre Marie (1853-1940), French neurologist; described Marie–Foix Syndrome (1913), Marie–Foix–Alajouanine syndrome (1922), Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (1886), Bamberger–Marie syndrome (1889), Marie-Strümpell disease (1884), and was the first to coin the term “acromegaly” in 1886

1892Nils Johan Hugo Westermark (1892-1980), Swedish radiologist; described Westermark sign (1938)

1897Ella Hutzler Oppenheimer (1897-1981), American pathologist; described Landing-Oppenheimer syndrome (1957, 1959)

1927David H. Spodick (1927-2019), American Cardiologist; described Spodick stages of pericarditis (1974), Spodick sign in acute pericarditis (1974), and Spodick sign in aortic stenosis (1976)
