1840 – The journal that would become the British Medical Journal (BMJ) first appeared as the Provincial Medical and Surgical Journal (Vol 1, issue 1), later adopting the title British Medical Journal in 1857.
Births
1916 – James Francis “Frank” Pantridge (1916-2004), Northern Irish cardiologist and widely regarded as the father of emergency medicine. Devised the Pantridge defibrillator (1965) and the Pantridge Plan (1966)
Deaths
1916 – Vincenz Czerny (1842-1916), Czech/Bohemian surgeon. Designed the Czerny pillar suture and Czerny operation. Performed the first vaginal total hysterectomy and introduced pyelolithotomy as a treatment for nephrolithiasis
1953 – Florence Rena Sabin (1871-1953), American anatomist and medical researcher. Provided first description of Mees Lines (1900)
1960 – Richard Barratt Terry (1914-1960), English Physician; described Terry’s Nails (1954), and Red Half-moon nails (Red lunulae) (1954)
2019 – Robert McDonald Hess Jr (1931-2019), American neurosurgeon; described the Hunt-Hess Scale (1968)
