Land Cruiser Citizen × ARACO pair

A matching pair of gold-tone Citizen quartz watches carries a Land Cruiser vehicle illustration together with LAND CRUISER and ARACO V.I.U. branding. The watches were supplied with Citizen documentation and were produced as complementary men’s and women’s models.

Their association with ARACO is particularly significant. Rather than being simply another Land Cruiser-branded consumer watch, the pair may have been produced as corporate, commemorative or presentation pieces associated with the company involved in Land Cruiser manufacture. Their precise date, distribution and the meaning of the V.I.U. inscription remain to be established.

Original packaging

The two watches survive together in a Citizen presentation box with separate Citizen Quartz instruction and warranty booklets. The accompanying Japanese documentation identifies Citizen’s contemporary service network and provides further evidence that the watches were supplied as Citizen products rather than simply fitted retrospectively with Land Cruiser-branded dials.

No Land Cruiser- or ARACO-specific product label has yet been identified on the surviving packaging, and the original method of distribution remains uncertain.

Date of manufacture

Probably August 1994

The larger watch carries serial number 480557. Under the conventional Citizen serial-number system, the first digit indicates the final digit of the production year and the second digit the month, giving August in a year ending in 4. The possible dates therefore include 1994 and 2004. Surviving examples of reference 1030-344791 are generally attributed to the 1990s, with at least one independently documented example specifically dated to 1994, making August 1994 the most likely interpretation.

The smaller watch has SN 340967 which points to April of a year ending in 3, presumably April 1993. That means the two watches were not manufactured together despite being presented as a pair. Plausible if ARACO commissioned stock Citizen references rather than Citizen manufacturing a dedicated matched pair for the project.

ARACO Co., Ltd. was closely associated with Toyota and the manufacture of Land Cruiser bodies, giving the dial branding a direct connection with Land Cruiser production rather than just Toyota merchandising.

Whether they were employee presentation watches, commemorative pieces, corporate merchandise or otherwise distributed has not yet been established. The meaning of the V.I.U. abbreviation also remains unresolved.
