Urate (Uric Acid)
Uric acid is the major end metabolite of purine.
- Purine found in nucleic acid and exogenous sources
- Commonly used as marker for gout and pre-eclampsia
- Levels do not usually indicate severity of disease
Causes of Increased Urate in serum
- Idiopathic
- Gout
- Impaired renal excretion
- Pre-eclampsia (urate rises 0.01 for every week of pregnancy normally)
- Disseminated malignancy
- Liver disease and CCF
- Glycogen storage disorders (Type 1)
- Psoriasis
- Haemolytic and sickle cell anaemia
- Drugs
- Most diuretics
- Catecholamine
- Salicylates
Causes of Decreased Urate levels
- Defective tubular absorption
- Wilson’s disease
- Fanconi syndrome
- Paradoxically in certain neoplasm’s
- Myeloma, lung carcinoma, Hodgkin’s

Chris is an Intensivist and ECMO specialist at The Alfred ICU, where he is Deputy Director (Education). He is a Clinical Adjunct Associate Professor at Monash University, the Lead for the Clinician Educator Incubator programme, and a CICM First Part Examiner.
He is an internationally recognised Clinician Educator with a passion for helping clinicians learn and for improving the clinical performance of individuals and collectives. He was one of the founders of the FOAM movement (Free Open-Access Medical education) has been recognised for his contributions to education with awards from ANZICS, ANZAHPE, and ACEM.
His one great achievement is being the father of three amazing children.
