VF and VT DDx
Overview
Ventricular fibrillation and (pulseless) ventricular tachycardia mandate immediate CPR, advanced life support and correction of underlying causes.
Causes
- Ischemia
- Ventricular tachycardia
- Hypoxia and acidemia
- Electric shocks (e.g. cardioversion, electrocution, lightning strikes)
- Pre-excitation syndromes with rapid ventricular rates
- Cardiomyopathies and structural heart disease
- Myocardial scarring (e.g. post-infarction)
- Medications, poisoning and toxic exposures (e.g. type 1A antiarrhythmics, digoxin, phenothiazines, tricyclic antidepressants, sympathomimetics)
- Electrolyte disorders (hypokalaemia, hypocalcaemia, hypomagnesaemia)
- Brugada syndrome and other channelopathies
- Long QT syndrome
- Myocarditis
